Salmon and Pancake feast!

I had a really good night last night. A friend called Gary who works on a salmon farm came round and gave me a huge salmon (when I say huge I mean gigantic!) so loads of us got together and each cooked dishes and had a big feast! the salmon was scrumptious, the best I have ever had.. all the better for being so fresh! I learnt a few new dishes to try which was cool! Ronan went and picked the lemons and limes and its amazing how much flavour they add to dishes! and I absolutely love roast kumara! Its different from the english sweet potatoe as there is a few different varieties over here.
and of course it was pancake day so us English introduced all the other nationalities to pancake day and had lots of pancakes for pudding!
Then to end the evening Stu from Scotland lit these pai and swung them round in circles and in diffferent swirls. A couple of other people tried but I thought seeing as though I burn myself if I so much as light a candle then swinging around these balls that are on fire might not be a good plan! So I just watched and took photos! I will put them online when I can! I might try and put my photos on Cd at work today - as none of the backpacker computers allow you to put your USB cable into their computers or download anything (I guess as otherwise we'd alll be downloading everything!)
I'm not sure what my internet access will be like when I leave Akaroa, I'm lucky with this job as I get free internet (and laundry - which is another huge bonus for me!)
The weather had been pretty bizarre this week, but then people often say you can have 4 seasons in one day in the peninsular! Yesterday it was freezing in the morning, hot in the afternoon, then went freezing again so I had to have two thick jumpers on it the evening and two big duvets on at night and now its really hot again! the evenings and nights are often cold but not usually as bad as last night! someone was saying that snow is even forcast on Thursday in the peninsular! Thats mad seeing as though today people are laying on the beach getting a sun tan! thats what makes it so hard to know what to pack! (so Louise when your packing to come out next month you need warm PJ's and jumpers for the evenings and probably something cool for the days! Be aware you can do laundry pretty much everyday so you don't have to bring more than 1 or 2 of each)! I wish I had brought half as much as I did!
So I only have 11 days left in Akaroa. Eva and I are going to stay at Onuku farm on Sunday night in the stargazer hut. Its meant to be amazing there and I can't wait! Its out in the middle of nowhere (about 6kms from Akaroa) in a maori village. We have managed to get monday morning off together so we can head back in time for work in the afternoon!

Baked!

Correction! I said my new job was 30 mins out of Christchurch when i actually mean 30 mins out of Auckland! Silly me! anyway the flight is now booked for the 11th march which is all cool!
It has been baking hot today which was not nice to work in! I was practically crawling on the floor from heat exhaustion by the end of the day! The matter was not helped by my bleeding fingers! I have broken by nails right down to the quick from scrubbing floors and of course I keep bashing them and then they bleed! so now I am wearing pasters on them all!
Yesterday I had the afternoon off and Eva and I went up to Tree Crop Farm. It was lovely!
Although it was a 2 and a half hour walk up a steep hill in 30degrees which wasn't so nice! I love the walk decriptions which say - just wlk up this gentle path, when your standing at the bottom of the steepest hill you've ever seen! trhats the trouble with being in the moutains I guess! They are all old volcanoes that erupted a long time ago.
The night before I babysay for the twins Max and India (my bosses children). That was some extra cash which was good! they have a lovely house with beatiful views of the mountains!
I have the morning off tomorrow so intend to spend it in the hammock reading the book I've just started -"tommo and hawk" - the sequal to the Potato factory - which eva is now reading, and reading very fast - faster then i read it and since she is reading in a language that is not her own thats highly impressive! I wish I could read that fast in other languages! Eva and I are getting along well and I'll miss her when I leave Akaroa but hopefully we will meet up again somewhere!

Arranging my next job!

I finish my job at the pharmacy on 9th March and cleaning on the 10th, so I've found a job starting on the 11th March. the only trouble is that its the other end of the country - but thats okay as I was going to have to go accross the country to meet Lou in Auckland in April anyway! so the plan is to work at Marco Polo Backpackers 30mins out of Christchurch in Orewa North. I have found a few cheap flights but its easier said than done paying for them as the internet won't let you use EFTPOS, of course there is no travel agents in Akaroa, and the phone line is closed at the weekends so I guess I will have to wait and try and phone on Monday.
Today I have a busy day, cleaning as usual 9:30-11:30, pharmacy 2-6pm and then I'm babysitting Sarah's 6 year old twins from 6pm-10pm.

Stormy Weather!

When I was a t work yesterday the weather went silent and still and there was suddenly this big bang and the door flew open.. there was so much wind, hail and rain all night and all day today it was unbelievable! they call it a southerly whatever that is! Apparently another one is due on Saturday! It meant the pharmacy was very quiet today which was a nice break!
Bex went into Christchurch today which was cool as we all sent her off with shopping lists! Its quite hard in such a small village. So I got my supplies of fruit loops and ribena!
theres 4 of us working here at the moment. Eva (from Holland) and I clean (and Justine has been but she leaves tomorrow), Ronan (from Ireland) and Bex (from Australia) do reception. Then of course theres the owners Sarah and Roy as well. I'm still getting on well with everyone which is good! Plus I meet lots of people who are staying at the backpackers! As theres no TV we usually chat and play games! its quite handy being one of the only native speakers when it comes to scrabble!
Theres not alot else to say really! Apart from I'm feeling happy and settled here!
