The other day someone asked exactly what managing a backpackers entailed.. People also seem to think its filled with excitement or something! (and its not!)
Okay so here goes.. here is my day..
7:30am Alarm goes off, get up and dressed and get money out of safe etc..
8am Open reception, attach phone to waist ( I carry it around me all the time so I dont have to run for the phone which is quite handy..), unlock spa and put chemicals in it, (were quite lucky with our spa.. its not like the party hostels whose spas are always joked about by saying you need contraception to get in them.. netherless its good to test it and make sure its clean with the little litmuss paper!) sweep leaves and empty ash trays and clear up wine bottles etc, switch lights off, open windows, feed cats (that one usually gets done first because they are mewing at me so much..) and have breakfast. Of course while I do that morning routine people are checking out, asking me lots questions, and some people try to check in.. god knows why people think their beds will be ready for them at 8:30am? Then you've got the lonely people travelling alone who want someone to talk to.. (incidently the conversation is always the same.. where have you been? where are you from? and where are you going?)
9am Ruth gets up and we clean. (while answering questions and checking people in and out..) some people try to sleep in but I politely knock on their doors at 10:15 and say you do realise that check out is at 10am (I can be nice about it.. but if their still in there in another 15 minutes the teacher voice will be used..)! We have usually finished cleaning by 11:30am when Ruth finishes to get ready for her other job. I then collect peaches and lemons etc to put in bowls for free, check the online bookings, have lunch and then start my baking!
The afternoons tend to be quiet so thats when I pull a mattress out on the roof and and do a bit of reading and writing, check my own emails, do the gardening, get all the washing off the line and fold it up (have got very good at folding double sheets!) - think about how many sheets etc I have to wash each day! I tend to sit outside talking to guests at this time of day as people are checking in and asking all sorts of questions.. (I am expected to know everything.. and to lend them everything.. from what will the weather be like to do I have hair straighteners.. and of course I have to know every single tourist attraction.. hence me getting freebies to try them all out!!) I also have to be a counsellor for the girls missing their boyfriends at home and the people wanting to find themselves by travelling...)
The people who have just arrived in the country tend to be most demanding.. today a guy who wont sleep on top bunks.. tough luck matey thats the last bed..(honestly.. we have 90 year old ladies backpacking on their own who are fine with top bunks.. god knows why an 18 year old boy cant cope?! he says hes afraid of falling out!! admittedly that is something to get used to in NZ, no rails of top bunks so if you roll in the night you would fall out - but thats surely all part of the fun.. actually my backpackers is great as we only have 2 bunkbeds the rest are all proper beds! i like hostels with no bunks!
Then at 6pm since the clocks changed its windows shut and lights on.. dinner in front of friends then shortland street..! (never get to see a whole episode due to the bell ringing..). I have become convinced that people will ring the bell when your the furthest away from it that you can possibly be.. I could have been in the office 2 minutes before and they would have seen me.. but they wait till I am at the end of the garden till they ring the bell...
Then I close reception at 9pm, empty all the money out washing machines and the internet, cash up and make sure everything balances..
Depending on whose in each night I might spend the evening outside taling to people or in the spa (once everyones checked in for the night I will sometimes put a note on reception informing people that reception has moved to the spa.. and I take the booking diary and the phone next to the spa..) or watching TV or a video in my lounge. Obviously once again i cant have a whole conversation of see a whole film without the bell ringing but at leats I have down time its not as if I'm working full on for the entire 14 hours.. otherwise I'd die..
Then at 10pm I lock the spa and switch the music off.. and hopefully I can be in bed by ten past 10! Of course life doesnt always work out like that but on a good day everythings done and dusted by then.. of course you still have the stupid English ppl calling from the UK trying to book a room not thinking about the time difference.. whether they think we have a 24 hour reception or what I dont know! Anyway I have to answer the phone or they will carry on rnging and I wont get back to sleep but I tell them no I cant check the bookings as I'm in bed and they are usually quite apologetic!
So thats the excitement of my day! Of course how good a time I'm having depends on who is staying. I've been lucky this week as there has been plenty of nice ppl!
A girl called Susan from Brighton is staying this week which is nice, weird thinking about the UK aqain! Have decided I may (MAY) live in Brighton one day (definately never Worthing again).
Hank my skipper the other day from the dolphin watching trip came by to see me.. I'm not exactly sure why.. I mean men dont usually call in on women with a bottle of wine for non ulterior motives.. but unfortuntely hen not my type and having got the low down on him from Moira he has quite a lot of kids from different women dotted around the country. BUT hes a nice enough bloke to have as a friend, salt of the earth type so hopefully we can just be friends and he can introduce me to ther locals.. but the good thing is that i was telling him how much I want to do a whalewatch but how I couldnt get a freebie.. so hes talked to a friend and I am now booked on a whalewatch for tomorrow so thats great! I have to get up early for it though before sunrise.. and walk to where the boats are rather than where the office is.. so an hours walk in the dark should be fun! But it will be worth it to see whales! (and for free - the trips are expensive as theres only one compnay they can charge what they like!)
A couple of nights ago was quite funny, this israeli guy had been flirting with me all night but since he hadnt got anywhere with me by 10pm when I informed him I was off to bed (alone) he decided to stay another night and bought a bottle of wine to share with me (but I've learnt 1 or 2 drinks is enough in the spa.. so he was not impressed as he got drunker and drunker waiting for the other 7 ppl to get out the spa so he could be alone with me and make his move.. but the other people who I was happily chatting to didnt get out the spa so he ended up drinking himself unconsious waiitng and having a little strop out that no he couldnt come up to my flat!
It has been SOOOOO hot here lately, we were the national high yesterday apparently.. so Laurien had a good idea the other night by getting the ice cubes out the freezer and that way we could still sit in the spa under the stars but rub ice cubes all over ourselves (you end up sitting on the edge holding ice to cool yourself down.. the hot tub is much better on cold and rainy nights really!!
Anyway needless to say I'm looking forward to my day off tomorrow! I get very excited about my days off!! Early night for me tonight so I can get up early to whalewatch!
Its first of april today (even though at the top of this it will say 31st!) cant believe its April already! how did that happen! the rest of my visa is going to run out so quick!
