Got a bit carried away with photos but it is a really cool place!
The first photo is us behind the bar..
The second on the throne (made me think of the ice queens throne in narnia)
and the third one my glass! (which is made of ice!) they have to have non slip mats on the ice tables otherwise the drinks will go flying!

The friends I hung out with for a few days while I was in Queenstown.. its been a few weeks now so cant even remember names.. thats so terrible of me. I do remember the names of people I hang out with for longer, but you meet so many people for just a day or 2 that its hard to remember them all. But anyway they were good friends for 4 days, and I've bumped into the guy various other towns too..

More photos of the 5 Below Bar, its full of really cool ice carvings!

The 5 Below Bar in Queenstown (Kept at -5 degrees and everythings made of ice)

rain, rain yes we have rain! I've got an hour left of work and its tipping it down. Bloody typical!
sunshine! yes we have sunshine! I got up this morning and it was so blissful to feel sunshine on my face on the walk to work - shame the walk isnt longer! please please let the sunshine still be out when i get home this afternoon!
had a nice surprise yesterday when Pat Champion gave me a ring on reception. Havent had a phonecall in so long! I answer the phone all day but its a never a personal call. still I guess I might get more if I gave out my cellphone number! (if any of you want it just ask - I'm not going to put it on my blog though or I'll get all sorts of nutters calling!)
Funny day at work as usual! Maries having a tanty as usual so is not speaking to me and is going out of her way to ignore me! Still she slammed the door and went out just now so hopefully shes out for a while! Its quite amusing really! If you watch people getting all stressy and being off with you it can be quite funny! We have a cleaner here whose off with everyone and likes to assert her authority with me.. sometimes I want to just wind her up to watch the fireworks (have managed to restrasin self so far, although I do enjoy watching her when I tell her to do something - which I have to as part of my job..)
I've given up working out why Maries in a mood today.. might be because I said no to staying till 10pm tonight (I'm scheduled to finish at 2pm). I lie and say I have plans now.. if they paid me to stay extra I'd do it in a flash.. but I'm not working out of the goodness of my heart - I'm not a volunteer!
My afternoon plans are to go for a walk in the sushine and then get a blanket and lay about in the sunshine! IT had better still be sunny when I get of work!!

sorry about all the moaning below!! am still happy and fine dont worry! just having a moan! (always good to get it out the system)!!
okay so it has now rained nonstop for the last 3 weeks, earlier ana and i were trying to remember when we last saw sunshine! (I would really like to go somehwere I can hang my washing out on the line.. you have to tumble dry it here as if you hang it around the house it just goes damp and smelly (as of course theres no heating)...
I am looking forward to seeing some sunshine again! will be leaving franz on 12th December (am am hoping I dont kill, Mel, daniel, aaron and tash before then)
went to greymouth this week. was a bit of a disaster but turned out well in the end! I didn't really want to go but ana and jessika both got the day off too so we could all spend it together in town. so the plan was to all hitch in thursday. you can never get a lift for 3 ppl so I set off first and got a lift within a few minutes to hoki and then a lift within a few minutes to greymouth. and I waited and waited..
I even bough the cheapest new cellphone I could find so they could contact me..since mine broke (it got wet on a walk last week) so I have LOST all my phone numbers (as they were stored on the phone not the sim card)... so ppl please email me with your numbers..! I dont have ANY!!
eventually they apparently gave up after standing in the rain for hours not getting a ride (it was meant to be a 2 day trip) and the evening was approaching.
they set off again the next morning and got a ride pretty quickly. I wasnt best pleased that I'd had to stay the nigth in greymouth on my own, but I was okay, made friends went to the cinema to see devil wears prada (very good, but some major differences to the book)
they made it in the morning and after a winge or two I was okay!
we spent the day shopping which I am so not used to.. how did I survive in brighton shopping all day? Its exhausting! we had 4 clothes shops to choose from in greymouth and I was shattered!
had to clean today (I clean at the hotel about once a week). It was martys, heathers and jessikas day off and mel phoned in sick (hangover) so marie and tash made some beds and cleaned 1 room and Ana and I cleaned the other 19 rooms.. was kanckered.. and happy to get home.. not so happy to find kids everywhere at home.. hence me coming out to internet shop for some peace..
I am so unmotivated workwise. the trouble with being on a wage and not an hourly rate is i have no motivation to do extra work as I cant get extra money. I dont even get extra money when i have to stay overnight.. My last week I will be working 8-8 most days but will I see any extra money? (Hah! I wish)! ahh well could be worse! (at least I am earning money I can live on aye..) at least I have job, a roof over my head, food in my mouth and good experience to put on my CV. so tomorrow I am working 8-8 on reception. I used to get time to do emails when on an 8-8 on reception but I know i wont have time now, were high season now and fully booked. I end up running round like a lunatic for the whole time..!
Am still looking for something workwise, havent found anything yet (theres loads in franz but as I've said I could really do with some sunshine) so I'll probably just set off and see what I find on the way.. that way I can see what I'm applying for first as well! I'm sure something will turn up. am writing to a few places on helpx and the wwoofing guide too. Have disovered this hosts website too where ppl want to show foreigners their hometown.. sounds pretty good will see what its like..

Mike, Jessika, brett, carina, ana and me..

I am not patient enough to be a manager of a hotel I've decided (now crossed off the list of possible careers!)
My top 10 reasons why not are:
  1. Customer phones thru as cannot get thru to mother. ask waht number he is calling and he is not using country, code. Explain each country has a dialling code and his is 001. At 3am he calls back, he cant get thru to someone else.. this time in Australia. Apparently he is tryign the 001 code. I explain that, that is the code for america and that australia has a different one 0064.. he doesnt get it and says "but I'm american" (Mangae to restrai self from screaming that phone doesnt know hes american) instead gently explain each country has a different code
  2. Customer phones thru and says we need our taps reversed as our plumber has made a mistake and he has now run himself a cold bath instead of a hot one.. and he doesnt expect these kind of mistakes when he's paying so much.. gently explain that blue still means cold and red still means hot.. but in NZ taps are round the other way..
  3. Customer comes to receptopn in nightwear and says his phone and clock are not working. I go and check and they are unplugged, so I plug them back in and reset them.. 30 mins later the same, 45 mins later then same. We eventually work out that yes they are unplugging them, and that they think they shoudl still work when unplugged..
  4. Cutomer phones through and I go to their room and give 10 step instructions on how to use.. light switches, oven, taps, hob, kettle, fire.. and they even ask how to get toastewr out of cupboard (Let me see.. open cupboard, lift toaster out, place on side, plug in..), offer to show microwave (I know this sort) but they say they are not stupid and they can manage.. right. 1 hour later.. can i come and show them the microwave.. end up having to give 10 step instructions on all of above again..
  5. Customer asks what the % of fat in out standard milk is, I look on packet but it doesnt say.. he gets shirty when I dont know and says I need to find out..
  6. Customer asks where the elevator is up the small flight of stairs. When I say there isnt one they refuse to take their luggage up, so I take it up (strong man watches..). they then refuse to walk up the stairs themselves.. (I do not joke whether they want me to carry them up or they might say yes)
  7. Customer complains they do not like room so I show them 4 others, she doesnt know so she gets on, we look at all rooms again (all at different spots around hotel), he gets daughter and we look at them all again.. then we all look at them again... they take the first one nearly an hour later of trying out different beds and opening every bloody drawer..
  8. Customers hands me lit cigarette and walks off.. apparently they want me to put it out?
  9. Customer arrives at 9am for check in and gets stroppy when room not ready, 12 noon the next day they get stroppy when i tel them check out was at 10am..
  10. Customer writes list of complaints.. Light bulb too bright (this is why we have dimmer switches), would prefer wooden breadboard to plastic, scratch on door, taps round wrong way, fire doesnt work (try on button), hairdryer doesnt work, (try plugging in..).

So which nationality are easiest? Japanese by far.. they wouldnt bother you if their room was on fire.

Thankfully I now have 2 days off work..!!! yay! I am off to dinner round some friends tonight and tomorrow I am off to greymouth, am going to stay overnight in a backpackers with ana and jessika.

only a coupel more weeks in franz now. My last week here is the schedule from hell. marie is goign away so I'm basically living there.. oh joy.. shes realsiing now her daughter might not be ideal as the new asst manager as she cant even make it in for 9am cleaning.. never mind I'm looking forward to leaving them to it..

couldnt sleep last night cos they were playing playstation outside my room all bloody night. apart from the noise I hate playstations with a passion. dont know what it is.. I just hate them. I think its because it means you cant talk or walk past in your own lounge or watch tv.. and they dont interest me so I dont want to join in (not that melissa daniel and aaron would have offered!) Always used to hate playstations when I lived a 6 Ardale too! Ana and I escpaed down the Alice May and Blue Ice for a couple of hours which was nice!

Dad was asking more about the ice climbing wall being built opposite my house so heres a press release.
Of course you can do glacier climbing on the actual glacier (www.nzguides.com) but this is the indoor one..

Scottish Ice-Climbing Expert Visits Franz Josef Tuesday, 14 November 2006, 10:04 amPress Release: Chambers PR Media release, 13 November 2006
Scottish Ice-Climbing Expert Visits Franz Josef
The founder of the world’s largest indoor ice wall has arrived in Franz Josef to lend an expert hand to the construction of the ice-climbing wall that will form part of the new multi-million dollar Hukawai Glacier Centre.
Jamie Smith, is the founder and Managing Director of Ice Factor, the world’s biggest indoor ice-climbing wall located in Kinlochleven, Scotland.
The 10-metre high ice-climbing wall is part of the new $6.5 million Hukawai Glacier Centre at Franz Josef which will be the biggest facility of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
It will consist of six different ice faces, enabling up to 20 people of all levels to experience an ice climb, at any given time, as if they were outside scaling the actual glacier.
“It’s all about getting the consistency of the water and ice correct to create glacier like ice,” says Jamie Smith. “There is a very fine line that must be reached – if the ice is too cold then it will be brittle and break and if it is too warm then it will turn to slush.
“The most important aspect is keeping the air temperature consistent at -10 degrees to ensure the ice remains at an optimal consistency. We want people to climb the wall and imagine, despite being indoors, that they could be outside climbing the real glacier.”
The Hukawai Glacier Centre has been two years in the making and is planned to open to the public early next year.
The Centre will enable people to walk through an entire glacier experience – starting in a rainforest and finishing in a space reflecting the features of the Franz Josef Glacier complete with ice cave and crevasse.
The ice-climbing wall will be in a separate room with floor to ceiling windows, so visitors can sit in the café and watch the people ice-climbing in action.
Jamie Smith will be in Franz Josef until Wednesday November 15.

I forgot to say how a Joanne a friend from nelson came to franz the other day.. it was nice to catch up. we went down the blue ice etc. I had to work 8-8 the next day though so couldnt stay out too late!
Then the other day I bumped into Marsonne and Pim who managed gingerbread house when I lived there in nelson, they were just passing though overnight but we went down the monsoon bar. Never sure what to say to them though, marsonne doesnt really like NZ and thimks everything I'm into is not her thing.. which is fair enough as if everyone was the same then the world would be a boring place..
Yesterday I had the day off and since Melissa and Daniel and the kids werent around I took the opportunity for a lie in (It was quite hard with the workmen finishing the ice climbing wall opposite the house) but I pretended to be asleep till 11am which was blissful! have lain in, in SOOOO long!! had a nice day in relaxing and tidying the house, sending xmas cards etc. Then yoga in the evening. Brett came round first as he wants to try out yoga. He is just lovely. hes really sweet the way he holds his umbrella over me so he get soaking wet.. and he's intelligent. He put us all to shame in yoga, he could do everything up to the advanced level.. pffh! How unfair!
then today Jessika and I went on an 8 hour walk in terrential rain.. OMG! it was literally like climbing up a waterfall, the water was just torrenting down the track.. I was glad of my new walking boots and the waterproof trousers dad sent that I used to wear on my moped back home! even so I was a drowned rat and my hip hurt, my leg and my ankle. My leg and ankle and purple and have been for a few weeks.. when I fell down on the glow worm walk I really gave my leg a bashing so from my toes to my knee its purple.. doesn't hurt so much now but looks yuk! good for getting sympathy though!
Pat sent me stuff from auckland and eva sent my stuff from nelson so I have all my stuff with me now.. its good to not have various stuff all around the country! I needed a sleeping bag again for when I move on, and if I go on multiple day walks..

the last few days have been funny!
The other night I walked in on Melissa and Daniel on the sofa and quickly diverted my eyes and went back into my room, but half an hour later Jessika came in with a couple of friends, they were still there but hid under the duvet so Jessika etc didnt know that they were lacking clothing.. they all sat at the table chatting for a couple of hours while Melissa and Daniel were trapped under the duvet on the couch! LOL!
Last night we have Brett and Carina round for dinner, and invited melissa and daniel, daniel had to work but Melissa said yes.
Melissa worked till 7pm, and Daniel was at home during the day but ignoring the kids (winamu and destiny). so jessika and I looked after them while we were all trying to cook.. you know the drill with 3 years olds.. new activities every 5 mins, drawing, games.. they each made their own pizzas on their own which was cute. Daniel sat in his room playing on the computer.. and he went out for a while. We could have ignored the kids thinking its not our responsibility but we've seen what happens when that happens, they end up breaking our stuff and playing on the road so it was easier to run an activity centre, at least they were happy kids then!
He went to work at 5:30pm and by that time Brett had arrived so I took the opportunity to put Winamu in the shower. The stench was revolting and I felt bad now we had guests. I had broached the subject with daniel earlier and he had said he thought the kids would be frighten((ed of showers?!
I could not get winamu out of the shower - he loved it!! He had a proper wash and played around in there for ages. he clearly has a terible ear infection with the pus dripping out of ears which is part of the stench. anway at least the smell was better for guests.
Melissa turned up at 7pm shortly followed by Aaron and Tash her (brother and sister) who proceeded to create havoc running around with the little ones. melissa went into the bedroom on the computer leaving us with the 4 kids. We fed Winamu and Destiny as they would starve to death otherwise and offered it to Tash and Aaron who looked at me as if we had offered him horse shit.. and sneered a no. At this point I took the 2 tiny ones into the room and said to melissa that it was bed time. (The screaming was impossible and we were actually trying to talk to our dinner guests). melissa stayed in the bedroom with the 2 little ones for the next hour while Aaron and Tash sat and stared at us going through the food cupboards etc.
At one point in the evening I had to go for a short walk to chill out! It really was a nightmare which is hard to describe unless your there! But I can look back at it and laugh - mainly because I know I'm out of there soon!!
On the bright side the food was great and Brett and carina are very nice. She works in 4 square and we met her at yoga last week and he works with Jessika at the alice may. we had loads to eat: Feta and Spinch pies, onion and pesto pies, 6 pizzas, wedges, and brazillian chocs. it took us all afternoon to cook it all but it was worth it!
Tonight is yoga so I'm looking forward to that, always feel fit and healthy after it! Its raining hard as usual! Maybe the next place I live wont be a rainforest!
am job searching everywhere, have applied to a backpackers in dunedin which looks promising, otherwise I'll just set of travelling again and something will turn up. (theres always plety of work about at this time of year) and if theres nothing I can always wwoof. theres no point in me panicking!

Okay so my psychic skills were spot on last night when I wrote in the blog (My psychic classes in Nelson must have paid off!). Melissa is being trained up for my job.. I have one months notice so my last day is 12/12/06.
I am both thankful for a great first month (second month not so great), for having had great housemates and for having learnt so much in this job. I am also thankful and relieved to be leaving!
My night did not improve when Melissas brother aged 12 (Aaron) stayed the night last night on our sofa (making the totel in flat 8 people).I had to work 8-8 today so I needed sleep so when I asked Aaron to turn down the TV which was on full blast outside my bedroom door at 11:30pm - he did marginally after giving me evils! (He has been laying around on our sofa alot lately, in just his boxers a bit like a slug).. anyway, I rammed my ear plugs into my eardrums and tried to get to sleep. at 2am I asked him to switch it off, he said after this film. At 5am I switched it off. I asked marie if aaron would be staying again tonight and she said maybe so I said .. sorry to be complaining again (this is after notice conversation so I thought what have I got to lose?!) and said I had asked Aaron to turn tv down at 11:30 and in the end had to switch it off at 5am. She spoke to him about it and of course when he denied it she belived him. (he said the kids had switched it on again). he is right to some extent - I know the kids did switch it on at 6:45 when they got up and ran havoc around the house and Melissa and daniel were dead to the world. In the end I gave them some of my cocoa pops etc.. When I left for work at 8:45am I knocked on melissa and daniels' door to say I was going out and someone needed to keep an eye on the children.. (because of course lighters and knives are all within easy reach..). They didnt stir so I went out. I dont know if thats the right thing to do or not but who knows!!
work is not much better, I both count down the hours that there is only 4 hours to go till the end of work but then there is also 4 hours to go until I have to face a house full of noisy kids and moody teenagers. Ana and Jessika bless them are being lovely to me and are very upset and the thought of me not being around for Christmas (so want me to get the YHA job). Ana's house hunting, and both are escaping to Okarito tonight to get away as they have days off tomorrow.

Queenstown lake and mountains (beofre the snow) it snowed my entire last day and night in Queenstown.. yay! I got my snow at last!! I had a great time in Queentown!
I finished work at 2pm on the Sunday really fed up after managing the place all week.. It was pouring down which came to my advantage when hitching as people felt sorry for me. I had a lift by 2:10 so lay in the back of a campervan with tyhis american guy called jared while two girls sat in the front driving and navigating! he was a nice guy and absolutely gorgeos, but he would make an ideal glacier guide. Hes such a poser and label consious guy! still it was a fun journey to wanaka. I felt sick when ever I sat up so I just lay in bed!! (in the back of the campervan)
we arrived in wanaka about 7:45 and they were staying in their van so I checked in the Purple Cow where I met lots of people and went to the 8pm showing of Clerks 2 at the cinema (its got couches and a car in it!) its was sooo funny! and they have an intermission so I had lasagne in the break! Yum!
I stayed up till 2am chatting to various people and then in the morning wanted to go straight to Queenstown (Only another 118kms) being the persausive kind of person I am I pesuaded deane who had a relaxing day of reading and moping about planned (and had just come from Queenstown to drive me there and then he would have to drive all the way back to Wanaka. We had a great day, he took me straight to Karawau bridge where I did my bungy, then checked me into my hostel, then bought me lunch and showed me round etc.
Then I was knackered after all the adrenalin so I came back and chilled out at the backpackers.
The next day I went into town and had another look round, booked myself for the canyon swing where I met lots of nice people and went out for lunch with ?(might have been another Paul?) had huge burger at fergburgers anyway! then went back to the backpackers and sat about on the balcony soaking up the sun overlooking the lake and met Tina from germany who tunred out to be my room mate. We decided to go out that eveing and arranged to meet at 7pm. By then I'd made lots of other friends, and invited them to come out with us, katie and Mike came and we all went to 5 below. This is the coolest bar!! in both senses!!
They kit you out with boots and coats etc and the bar is kept at -5, all the tables, chairs, bar and your glasses are made of ice and theres ice sculptures everywhere!! It great! I took so many photos! (you've got to wait for them though as they are on the next disk)
we then went to a few other bars but I was pretty tired from another adrenalin rush with canyon swinging!
The next day it snowed all day so I just wandered round the shops with tina and sat around watching dvds with Mike. was a nice day and the snow was beautiful!
I had booked a bus back to Franz Joseph as I didnt want the stress of hitching and worrying if I would get in time for work on Friday. the bus left at 8am and got into franz at 4:10 so its a long journey.
I was fairly near the back of the bus so after half an hour when he stopped for photos break I was ready to throw up - but I got chatting to this guy called gareth and he said I could sit next to him up the front. I felt much better there and chatted away to him non stop for the next 8 hours.. (lucky guy huh?!) anyway he wanted to take me out for a drink when we got back so I agreeed to meet him after yoga and we went out for a few drinks. Then I had this bright idea of taking him on the glow worm walk (I wanted him tro see all the local attractions... on second thoughts alking of into the rainforest with steep drops on either side when tipsy may not be the best plan. But I went back for my torch and we set off.. It was further than I remmebered and I told him to be careful as there were steep drops on either side into the glacial river and down a kind of mini canyon (big rocky drops anyway). we got to the top and sat watching the christmas tree lights of the glowworms when I got animated talking and flung my torch down the steep drop... we were fine down by the glow worms but as soon as we went 10 feet forward we were in total darkness and there was no moon to help us.. we decided we would be okay if we stayed to the left and were carful but held hands to keep safe. I thought this was just a ploy so he could hold my hand but Im so glad he did... 10 steps later I slipped down the steep drop, he held on to me, grabbed both hands and hauled me up (what a hero! arent I glad he's a strong cornish farmer!) I was very bruised and had a few cuts but what a relief! However, the rest of the journey was still an adventure, it was really scary and there were drops everywhere and bridges to get accross, at sone point we lost the path and were crawling around the rainforest with steep drops all around us.. he wanted to stay the night and wait till light but I said we could do it.. after the 3rd time of getting lost (and 3 hous latere)and I was about to give up , we were sat in a muddy bog and I had a look in my handbag to see if I had anything useful (we'd worked out neither of us had out phones) I discovered my camera.. I put it on the display to look at phots and realised it gae us enough light to get out. It kept cutting out due to low battery so we ran while it was working.. and finally got out.. covered in mud, scratches and bruises! thank god! scary!!
That night (3am - so just after I got in) melissa and daniel came back from te anau with 2 small children aged 3 and 4. When i woke up in the mornign I thought I was imagining things.. but no it turns out they are staying for a week.. it was my only lie in off the week so I was not impressed to find a very smelly child with nits dripping puss out of their ears trying to get in my bed with me.. and procceeding to walk in my room and have to door wide open whenver I tried to get dressed (my door doesnt lock). NOT IMPRESSED!
I had to stay at the hotel that night but melissa brought the kids back to the hotel as she had to watch Aaron. At 6pm I said to Mrie I couldnt hear the phone calls over the kids screaming and swearing. Of course nothing was done about it as usual.. By 8pm when I had hauled the kids out off the road for the 10th time I had words with melissa and said they had to stay in and be supervised, she said they were fine, I said it was not okay for them to be running in front of cars aged 3... (I said all this as polite as possible)
the last ppl didnt check in till 11pm and Melissa was paid to do the laudry in the evening as the water was off in the day.. of course when i got up in the morning the washing hadnt been done yet she will be paid.. (the bright side of being the bosses daughter) so I spent the morning rushing around getting launrdy done checking out guests, sending faxes, answering the phone and tripping over unsupervised children.. marie and deane were in bed with hangovers as usual.
Deane got up at 12 and said to me Marie was not happy at me having asked her to get the kids to be quiet last night.. it was her time off and she was with her friends... at least I could not restrain myself any longer and said i did not think it was okay fro guests to be complaining to me at the noise and for me to be woken up with children coming into my bed.. at this he said I should have gone and told the children to be quiet. (Excuse me is this my job.. besides their kids are so rough its like working at the refuge again.. I'm always asking tehm to be quiet.. anyway rant over.. I was not happy.
the day melissa moved in marie asked me when I would be leaving as she didnt want me not to see the country and to feel like I was trapped there. ( I though this was a bit bizarre at the time and wondered if she was trying to get rid of me)? yet they had told me how great I was and are always leaving me in charge. Then I spotted Melisss was being put on reception to be trained as well as cleaning. Maire said Ian (the owner who lives in Christchurch) wants Melissa to be trained on everything.. I wondered if it was my imagination or was melissa being trained up to take my job? Obviously when I got ther job marie had no idea Melissa would come and live here.. (since she moved into fostor car when she was 14) now Marie wants to do anything to keep her daughter happy... When Daniel asked me yesterday how long I would be here I just cut the crap and asked if melissa was going to take over from me when I left? He said yes... ahhh so it all falls into place...
so I am job searching. I applied to be a manager of the YHA so I am considering that, also a manger of a backpackers in kaikoura.. but am still looking around. Its goo to be prepared for when it all hits the fan...! Posted by Picasa
