Stability

Okay so have made a few decisons in the last couple of days..
Went to see Cheryl in hospital last night (who is stuck flat on her back after the spinal surgery) and told her and Graham I would be leaving Tasmania in the next couple of months but moving out of their place sooner if I could sort out alternate accomodation. They were upset I was leaving but understood my reasoning and have said I always have a place to come back to whenever I want.
I have since talked to/persuaded my boss and he has arranged that I can move into the other YHA hostel in North Hobart. He is going to go and get a new bed and stuff and get a room sorted for me tomorrow so I can move in Wednesday.. since when Derek lived there he was in the 20 share dorm I am very lucky as I'll have my own ensuite room.
So tomorrow I have the day off work for various medical appointments and I hope to get my brace off.. and then I guess get referred for physio..
I have also told work I plan to leave Tasmania in the next couple of months after I have saved up a bit more. They are upset as they wanted me to go into a management role but I'm a stubborn so and so and they understand my reasoning! I might try and get a tranfer to another YHA in Australia though.. worth a try!

Probably just as well I didnt tell you I wasnt going to drink ever again when I wrote in my blog complaining of my hangover yesterday.. since I have a hangover today! Still had a good night.. hadnt really been out in North Hobart before so it was good to see things I hadnt seen before, strange how you see a city in a whole new light and see all this stuff you havent seen before..!
Derek works as a builder at the arthouse cinema as well as being the night manager here so gets free tickets so that was cool and since you can take a glass of wine in with you thats even better..!
Before we left he was very insistent saying he was absolutely not going out anywhere but the cinema and was not going to be led astray by me.. hah I did smile to myself as he nursed his hangover this morning!!
Good film though.. went to see Children of the Silk road about war torn china in 1930.. was very emotional but educational too. I'm always feeling guilty I dont know about these terrible things that have happened in history so these true story type films are good for me!
The film was about rescueing all these orphans in China.. was thinking of volunteering for a project somewhere.. my friend Melissa who came over to Hobart the other night works for a company that sends volunteers out to places.. to help the turtles on galapagos or into an orphanage in Africa.. the trouble is if I'm realistic with myself I will want to rescue all the babies.. and since I'm not Madonna or Angelina Jolie the world doesnt work that way!
It was really good to catch up with Melissa the other day.. we have a scary amount in common!! were even having the same dreams right now!!
I didnt go and visit Cheryl in hospital yesterday as she was too unwell for visitors but apparently the operation went well which is a relief since the spine is one of those useful things..
Graham gave me a lift into town in the morning and I voiced that I would probably leave Hobart in the next couple of months.. he was pretty shocked.. I had been worried about telling Graham and Cheryl so I am glad that I have at least told Graham..
Theres this german girl in the backpackers who I have got to be friends with as she has been back and forth staying here alot.. but this week she went for a hike and fell.. shes smashed her ankle in 14 places.. wow I'm bloody lucky it was my arm and not my ankle.. shes flying home Monday poor thing..

Now I was going to start off saying I'm never going to drink again but lets face it I may have said that once or twice before! so lets be honest.. theres a high chance I will! Besides I had a good enough night last night to warrent chucking up all day today..!
My friend Melissa came over from Melbourne overnight as she was running a conference and staying at Montgomery's where I work so we went out on the town. At first it was hard to find places open on a Thursday night but eventually we found a stag party to join and then some guys staying overnight for a conference and they were staying at a cool hotel so we ended up back there for a party.. finally made it back to our own hotel at about 4am!
It was good to have a release - need that every so often! Good to have some "Melissa spirit" back as Louise put it in her text today!
Phoned Laura this week and cried down the phone to her.. not as loud as her little one though!
Have decided to leave Tassie - the job arent going to be happy and actually I really really like my job and I havent meant to mess them around. I feel terrible.. when I had the job interview I had every intention of staying in Tassie. But am going to save up for a couple of months first though not going to leave immediately or anything.. its good money and a great chance to save up.
Then I'll head over to Melbourne to catch up with friends before going off on my travels again and maybe looking for a job in Perth if I like it there.
Have been sorting out all my medical appts lately.. nothing wrong with me but always good to get check ups for everything and nows a good a time as any!
Am really hoping I get my brace off on Tuesday and start physio.. will be fab to have 2 arms again..
Cheryls in hospital at the moment, she had spinal surgery today and is going to have to lay flat on her back for a while so will visit her tomorrow morning before heading into town.. am sleeping at work again as am working early Sunday morning and its nice to be in town.. Derek and I are going to go to the cinema.
I did ask about moving into work but thats a no go.. but its cool to have the option a couple of nights a week to have my own ensuite hotel room in town! I will add though for my bosses benefit that I have no other choice than to sleep there to work certain shifts so it suits us both.
I have a strong feeling my boss can read all my emails and blog. I was happily deleting the history and everything when I discovered my boss from his office in town can have control over my computer at work, I tested this out the other day on the phone when I knew he was on my computer and I was answering a work related email and he rang me.. and I said "Oh what should I say to these guys in this email and he said hang on a second and read the email up on my computer screen from his office accross town.. hmnn technology.. well i guess at least when I have to have a chat about leaving he'll already be prepared for it.
Just a quick question but if I check my hotmail when I know he's not there (say 7am or on a Sunday) which I like to do as my break (I'm not on it all the time or anything but its nice to check them if its quite for ten mins) and then log out again at the end he cant get back into it can he? presumably the history of my computer shows on his as well anyway so history counts for nothing anyway..?

Scary ghosts!

Went on a ghost tour through work last night, went to Richmond and then Port Arthur.
Was strange going back to Port Arthur. I was there back in March yet when I was there it was like I had been there the day before and to be honext I've never been that fussed on old buildings. I might pretend to be and I like to see them briefly but half an hour wandering round is enough.
But Port Arthurs history and scenery is interesting and the journey there is spectacular.. went to some of the places Paul took me to when he first picked me up hitchikign which was kind of weird.. de ja vu or something!
However, the ghost tour was really good, lots of bloody and gory stories and apparently theres been lots of ghost sightings.. and certainly there is alot of dark energy there, the rooms are cold, dark and its like you can feel the sadness and death.
There is a building which used to be the cafe where there was a massacre recently by a gunman and that building is not nice to be in.
Anyway I was glad to go, and I hadnt been to Richmond before which has the oldest bridge in Australia so it was good to go there as well.
I know I complain that I have not come travelling to be with other English backpackers but I havce to admit it was kind of nice to spend the day with other English backpackers!!
The point of the trip though was for me to be able to sell the trip at work so that worked. I know what I'm talking about now..(hopefully!)
I feel kind of guilty continually as I have a permenent position here and I know I'll let them down eventually. People talk like I'll be here forever and that makes me feel really guilty because I havent meant to give people the wrong impression but I clearly have.
I admit I have been changeable, one minute I say I want to do this, the next something else but in reality I think I know what I'm looking for its just a matter of finding out where it is!
But you cant control life. I had ideas about what might happen here, and things didnt happen as I hoped so there you go.. another path will appear..
I do know I want to see the rest of Australia before my second year visa runs out (which I havent yet applied for). So at least one thing is a definate! (feel free to remind me of this if I change my mind!!)
The job is going well anyway, seemed to have settled in.. keeping the cleaners happy (havent had my head put through a window like the last receptionist) and am attempting to use my xray vision of who to let stay here or not.. the last guy I had this feeling about (an english male backpacker) but had no reason to not let stay here and told the other staff to watch out for because I had a feeling turned out to be slightly strange.. We have several world youth day girls here at the moment who are sweet and lovely and very insistent that they be in a girls only dorm etc and they werent overly exstatic at walking in on him *?!@!@!** off in the main lounge watching animal porn on the internet.. and thats aside from locking himself in dark rooms and leaping out at people and rearranging the furniture of the entire place?!
Found the 16 year old homeless boy asleep on the couch again this morning, poor kid.. but still havent to chuck him out..
Yay to working on Sundays.. double pay!! If only every day was a Sunday!!

Where all the strange ones go..

I feel like breaking out into a supergrass song this morning.. along the lines of "where do all the strange ones go?".. the answer clearly is Montgomery's.. sometimes I feel like I'm working at a care home or mental health support facility of somesort.. or homeless shelter/ refuge..
I turn away god knows how mnay people a day telling them where shelters are etc saying we only take international travellers etc but some always manage to sneak in.. mainly because of other staff..
This morning a guy nearly threw himself on the ground in a tantrum panicking I had stolen his washing powder.. after his 3 showers in 3 different bathrooms and keeping everyone awake pacing, then theres the guy with a severe learning disability who wants to come and chat and smells like he hasnt had a shower in weeks.. then theres the 6 JW's in their suits handing out leaflets to everyone who passes.. door knocking in a hostel?!, the old lady doing internet dating who has different men pick her up twice a day.. the old hobo guy who shuffles in the corner.. and of course the classic drunken backpackers who when I ask why they havent checked out yet at 11am when check out was at 10am swear at me and tell me to go away they are sleeping and then when I dont go away ask what day it is and then shreik why didnt you wake me up I've missed my flight?! oh I just love this job..! I've been so grumpy lately but luckily its just inside my head.. my inner rage is not affecting my customer service.. Derek assures me I'm not scaring the customers yet.. since I get to work at 7:30am we have breakfast every morning and I have my little moan and feel better..! (that is if I havent already scared the girl on the bus by blabbering on at her.. come to think of it.. she probably thinks I'm the nutter on the bus who sits next to her and doesnt stop talking?!.. ooh thats a scary thought.. hopefully not though.. she does after all choose to sit next to me..)
though of course I have complained that the staff here are a bit strange so maybe thats why I am here.. its not just the customers.. this is where all the strange ones go.. me included!
I'm not that much of a moan honest.. just been grumpy lately.. Pam (the cleaner) informs me its because I'm now 29 and therefore an old grump.. cheers!
Got my sisters birthday card a couple of days ago and photos of her and my neices.. so that made me burst into tears.. my sister looks so different and my neices are no longer babies.. they are little girls now! she has put money aside for me to contribute to a flight to come and visit.. do you think thats a hint at all?! We spoke on the phone too which was nice.. good to catch up..

An echidna

a picture of an echidna I stole from the internet since I left the house without my camera and didnt get to take a photo of the one I saw!!

Bandicoot

This is not a photo I have taken.. I stole it from the internet.. but thought I shoudl explain what a Bandicoot looks like.

I saw an echidna!!

I am never leaving the house without my camera again!! I usually take my camera everywhere.. I literally take it to the supermarket with me.. but yesterday Kathryn called in on her way to some bra extravaganza sale to ask if if I wanted to go too and I thought well i'm not going to be taking photos of bras.. so we got the the bottom of the driveway and an echidna ran in front of the car.. I leapt out of the car and got to stroke it.. how cool is that!!? admittedly they are not that strokable being similar to hedgehogs.. but anyway needless to say I was ridiculously excited!!
I have been waiting for ages to see an echidna and here one was on the driveway..! I've informed the family that their next task is a platypus!!
I've seen a few bandicoots now as I am getting up so early in the mornings and they are still running about.. and since wallabies are just an everyday occurance now I dont squeel with excitement every time I see them anymore!

It was Matthews birthday yesterday so we had all the family round for a meal and as usual I ate too much!

Its my birthday today (although it will probably print the 19th at the top of this post).. here it is the 20th. Although I woke up at the usual 6am for work I realised it was a Sunday and I could chill out and go back to sleep (yay)!
Then at a more respectable time I leaned over and opened my birthday cards before getting up and being given hugs and pressies.. then we had a roast beef Sunday lunch with the family which was cool. Cheryl had made yorkshire puddings especially for me.. and for once I wasnt the one going "what the hell is that?!" At last.. I seem to spend my entire time not knowing what aussies are on about and appearing as thick as 2 short planks..

I tried to make phonecalls to various people in Europe last night (your Saturday morning) but all of you were out (how dare you have lives?!)..

Thank you for your cards eveeryone and for the birthday package Eva.. will go out shopping with the money!! you do realise that everyone thinks the same I thought about all dutch people? and that we were expecting the trippy magic candles you sent to get us all stoned.. (I will point out that they didnt!!)

Independence

I clearly never appreciated having the full use of 2 arms enough and somebody up there thought right you need to learn a lesson here.. and of course when I hadnt learnt enough the first time they rebroke it (easier if I give the blame elsewhere!!!) No am joking really I have learnt my lesson.
But also made me realise how much I like to be independent.
I have had to have help in some kind everyday washing the skin infection on my arm and refitting the brace.. with doing up my bra and stuff.. yesterday I managed to put up my hair for the first time.. I cant tell you how exciting that was! As for when I can sleep on my stomach again its going to be a joyous day!! I have never been able to sleep on my back but for the last 2 months I have had to whether I like it or not.. and I cant do everything I'm meant to at work.. lcukily everyone is very understanding.. if I'd been in a backpackers and this had happened I'd have been stuffed.. and at the same time I'm met lovely people, got a great place to live and got a job so all is good!
But (there has to be a but?!) would anybosy not laugh at me if I say after less than 2 weeks of being in the working world I could really do with a holiday?! I realise evryone thinks I am on a permenent holiday.. and your probably right.. I have no excuses!
Had a hectic day at work today.. at one point I had 4 calls on hold, a queue at reception and a woman with 4 screaming children who had just come off a ten hour flight escaping Domestic Violence.. she had her teeth kicked in and the needle track marks were clearly visable and she wasnt happy I wanst going to let her stay at the hostel.. I felt terrible for not being able to help her and offered to call the local shelter for her but she had grown up in one and didnt want to go back.. so ended up ordering a cab to colony 47.. I so hope they can help her.. Cheryl is going to give me a list she has made of support services that I can give out as we have alot of similar situations and homeless kids on a regular basis and I feel bad just chucking them out.. I want to be able to do something to help. I mean I dont want them in the hostel either because its not appropriate or fair to our guests.. so I have to tell them to leave but it would be good to tell them the right places to go. I really want to do a counselling course too so I know the right things to say..
I have been ridicuolusly tired all week.. falling into bed of an evening..roll on the weekend and a lie in!!

Montgomery's

This is where I work!
Am all up to date with photos now so until I take some more thats it folks!!
Ooh by the way thanks people for birthday cards, some have arrived already.. am being very good and not opening them though!

View from our driveway

Every morning and evening as I walk up or down the driveway (a steep hill) to where I'm living right now there is the most stunning views!! Unfortuntely I'm leaving too early for the sunrises this week and its still pitch dark.. but am walking home in time for these gorgeous sunsets!!
